Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council - Nanoparticles used as optical sensors in drug determination

The Iranian researchers conducted their research at Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz (SCUoA), Khuzestan, Iran, and their aim was to determine one of the drugs used in the treatment of blood pressure. The methodology used specific nanoparticles (NP) as optical sensors. Advantageously the method provided savings in terms of cost-effectiveness and less time consuming, which is required for testing in typical laboratory devices.

The drug Hydralazine (Apresoline) is usually used in the treatment of high blood pressure during pregnancy and/or in the prevention of heart attacks due to high blood pressure. Unfortunately, excess consumption of the drug can cause problems, such as headache and pain in joints and muscles. Though there are existing methods to determine the amount of the drug, the aim of the researchers was to introduce a new, fast and accurate method to measure the drug in medical samples.

Prussian blue NPs were synthesised which producing unique optical, magnetic and catalytic properties. The quantity of Hydralazine present in existing medical samples was measured at micro-molar scales by smartly taking advantage of the optical properties of the NPs as an optical sensor via a spectroscopy method.

The new method is simple, cheap and fast which does not require complicated devices such as chromatography to carry out medical sample tests. According to the research team their NPs synthesised were in size range of approximately 1-20 nm. Original article available here

As with similar type USA studies, the future potential of nanomaterials for the battery industry is exponential. As stated previously, DCN Corp strongly believes it can supersede, by providing a dip controlling process which supplements the other attributes of employing S and Na.
